Amazon vs Meesho vs Flipkart profitability, same product

Same product, same price, three very different profit outcomes — a worked side-by-side comparison of fees, shipping and effective margin across all three marketplaces.

Same product, same price, same seller behavior — list a ₹1,299 apparel item on Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho, and the fee structures alone produce very different profit outcomes. Here's the actual math, not a guess.

The product

A ₹1,299 apparel item costing ₹480 to make, moving 300 orders a month, with the same funnel assumptions across all three channels (5% cancellation, 60% COD share, 25% COD RTO, 6% returns) — so the only thing that changes between rows below is each marketplace's real fee structure.

The comparison

MarketplaceCommissionContribution profitMargin
Amazon21%₹57,38621.0%
Flipkart0%₹1,23,28545.0%
Meesho0%₹1,23,38845.1%

Monthly figures on 300 orders. See each marketplace's calculator for the full cost breakdown and sourced fee defaults.

Why Amazon nets roughly half

The gap isn't subtle: Amazon's ₹57,490/month referral-fee bill — a direct result of this item sitting just above Amazon's ₹1,000 zero-fee apparel threshold — is almost entirely the difference. Flipkart and Meesho both charge 0% commission on fashion, so this specific product keeps roughly double the profit on either of them compared to Amazon.

That doesn't make Amazon the wrong channel for every product — items priced under ₹1,000, or in categories with Amazon's 0% tiers, tell a completely different story. It does mean the commission rate is the first number to check before assuming any marketplace is interchangeable with another for a given product.

Where Meesho's "0% commission" story gets more complicated

Flipkart and Meesho land at almost the same contribution profit here (₹1,23,285 vs ₹1,23,388), but for different reasons. Meesho's 0% commission is real, but its reverse-shipping charge on RTO/returned orders — ₹150 per unit in this scenario, well above a typical third-party courier rate — quietly closes most of the gap that 0% commission would otherwise open up.

What to do with this

  • Run your own product through all three calculators — this comparison is specific to a ₹1,299 apparel item, and the fee structures shift meaningfully by category and price band.
  • Don't assume "0% commission" means lower total cost — check the fee line items that replace it (fixed fee, shipping, reverse logistics).
  • If you sell the same product on multiple channels, this gap is a real argument for channel-specific pricing, not one blended price everywhere.
